Girl Up is a campaign of the United Nations Foundation, which aims to help impoverished adolescent girls by providing them with access to education, health services and leadership opportunities. Other students within the club and I meet on a regular basis, to work to raise awareness and funds to help support girls in third-world countries with opportunities surrounding security, safety, health and education. We also aims to empower girls in their local community to discuss and tackle female issues. Events include advocacy campaigns such as Food for Facts, Awareness Days, a Charity Fashion Show, and guest speakers. All proceeds from fundraising events are donated to the United Nations for girls in third-world countries.
Facts for Food
Apart from regularly attending meetings, I helped put up posters around the school with facts regarding gender inequality around the world. During a lunch, depending on how many facts people memorized, they could get a baked good or more in return.
World Fest
On behalf of girl up, I volunteered to help with our booth of face painting. Although I do not have pictures of the actual face painting, here is the sign up sheet:
Baking for the Charity Fashion Show
Girl Up was one of the Clubs running the annual Charity Fashion Show, to contribute I made brownies that could be sold to raise funds for Girl Up.
End of Year Reflection and Supervisor Review
Supervisor's comments about my part-taking in Girl Up this year: "Monique is a vital member of the group and is always able to contribute helpfully during brainstorming. Additionally, Monique demonstrates her commitment to the group by attending every meeting and helping at every event. Girl Up wouldn’t be the same without Monique." (see ManageBac for comment).
This past year I have thoroughly participated in the support of Girl Up. Through attending weekly meetings, discussing and planning future events- as well as partaking in events. However my weakness falls in my lack of initiating events. This is because Girl Up is a group that is strongly lead by its leaders, and leaves little requirement to initiate events as a member. I am proud to be a member of GirlUp, that is constantly engaging with issues of global importance.

Girl Up World Fest
At world fest, Girl Up was selling hot chocolate. I helped with taking down the set up of the stand, which was quite easy and only took a matter of minutes. Hot chocolate is almost always a big hit every year, given that it is so cold!
Reflection:
This year at Girl Up, I have helped with Apple Fest, and continued with attending regular meetings. This club has grown so much since when I started 3 years ago, and it makes me happy to know that it will continue on once we graduate. In terms of challenges I have faced, I have faced the challenge of finding ways to stay involved. The group is so large that often opportunities to volunteer close up quite fast, but I will be volunteering for the Charity Fashion Show this upcoming spring so I look forward to that. This club has been very rewarding in the long run, and I look forward to see where it goes.
